Biog / About

KP Projects creates unique outdoor arts performances, installations & community engagement projects for the widest audiences.  Our work focuses around the environment, sustainability & healthy living, with projects exploring cycling, recycling, awareness of local environments, digital storytelling & new technologies in public spaces.

We work with a range of partners & collaborators to create high impact projects across these areas & agendas, creating memorable experiences to change the way people think/feel, help encourage behaviour changes & sustainability.

KP Projects is led by Artistic Director/Creative Producer Karen Poley, who has created & produced outdoor arts festivals, events, performances & community engagement projects of all scales & in many contexts over the last 25 years.  She brings the core tenets of outdoor arts to all areas of KP’s work – the lack of barriers, engaging people in new ways & everyday places, transforming perceptions of local areas & their widespread appeal – creating genuinely enriching possibilities.

Current projects include:

The Living Coast Undersea Experience (TLCUE) an interactive virtual reality & 360 film allowing users to explore the underwater world of Beachy Head West & East Marine Conservation Zones along the Sussex coast, without getting wet.  Read a short blog HERE  Future developments include a training & work experience programme, region-wide touring & lesson plan development across Years 1-7.

The Bicycle Ballet Company contemporary outdoor, performance exploring issues & ideas about bicycles, cycling & other forms of active travel.  Performances fuse dance & physical theatre with visual spectacle, comedy & striking soundtracks.  The company has created seven productions, with three currently touring:

  • The Cilia Dance -a co-created movement conversation about how local people move around their towns & cities; a playful, fun, collaborative & empathic exchange & invitation to dance in each others’ shoes
  • Blazing Saddles – a visual narrative evolving from a contemporary choreography celebrating women, cycling & fashion, which aims to be part of the drive to encourage more women to ride bicycles.  This show has evolved a major heritage project across Worthing, Brighton & Hove, Newhaven & Bexhill, Sussex Blazing Saddles
  • Strictly Cycling – a roving, visual performance, inspired by flash mobs & Dadaism, everyday cycling & the great British weather
  • Watch a short film made to celebrate the company’s 15th anniversary in September 2021

The Great Pebble Dash an outdoor game to get people walking, seeing & experiencing their towns & cities in a completely new way
